Turn On The Red Light
This year has been tough for a lot of people. Finances are tight. Tensions are high.
Things at the Christiansen house have been pretty tight, but fortunately I haven't had to prostitute myself on Colfax Ave.....yet.
I'll be turning the ominous red light on anyway.
The next two months will involve a bunch of recording.
I am reformatting "In Transit" back to it's original EP version, plus a few live songs that were recorded @ WKYGT in Idaho Springs, CO right after the EP was finished. There's a loose theme to the songs and they represent a specific time in my life, so I decided to take the tracks that I recorded a year later off the album and just make them singles for now.
"Photosynthesis" is the new EP I am beginning this week. I am planning on 6-9 songs. It'll be a full production, band album, except that I'll be playing everything. There's just no budget right now for a band and I am aiming for a January release, so time is a factor too. Like "In Transit" there is a loose theme to these songs as well.
I'll also be recording some songs in a one guitar/one vocal format. I want to get some stuff that gives an accurate representation of my solo performances so that I can start booking again in January. I might just stick to doing a few rearrangements of some covers I do.
We'll see.

Open Letter To A Venue
Hi -----,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
I didn't realize that this would be an exposure only type of gig.
There are no lack of opportunities for musicians who just want a chance to be heard, but if you want quality music that actually draws people to your venue, you need to have a certain skill level of musicians with quality equipment.
I would be happy to perform for you guys, but I cannot play for free.
Good live music is a draw for a restaurant and both out of necessity and on principle, I only play at venues that are willing to pay. Done right, live music is a selling point for a restaurant and like any kind of marketing, it does and should cost the restaurant something.
I've played all over the Colorado, as well as doing a national tour last summer, and have found that there is no correlation between how much people enjoy your music and how much they tip. It is not like waiting tables where there is a customary expectation of a certain percentage of the bill being paid as a tip (and where there is a minimal guaranteed wage from the owner).
I would be willing to play for a $-- per 50 minute set guarantee, which is half of what I usually get, to give you a chance to see if having quality music it is worth your while.
I'd be happy to help you guys do well in becoming a venue where people can come expecting to hear good local musicians (by playing for lees than what I usually do and connecting you with other good local performers), but performing cost musicians time and the investment that I have made in obtaining professional level equipment.
